Manuscript expert translation · Tokyo, since 1987

From the Japanese draft
to the accepted paper.

Translation is the first step, not the whole job. A subject-matter translator renders the manuscript, a native reviewer checks it, an editor works on how it reads, and a proofreader runs the last pass — with free pre-submission proofreading and support through to the journal.

Why researchers choose Forte

Five things you are paying for

Translators, not linguists alone

Medical and technical research needs more than language skill. Forte’s translators are selected for the subject as much as for the pair of languages.

Clear, accurate, publishable

Three tests in that order. A sentence can be accurate and still unpublishable; the review and editing steps exist for the difference.

Follow-up without a limit

Free pre-submission proofreading on Japanese → English, and the questions answered for as long as the paper is in review.

One coordinator, start to finish

The same person from the first quote to the accepted paper, who knows your terminology and your deadline.

Through to submission

Instructions-to-authors checks, cover letters, proxy submission and the response to reviewers — the parts that come after the translation.

Rates

Three services, two directions

This page is the manuscript journey: the translation, the three passes after it and the support through to the journal. The translation service on its own lives on Academic translation, at the same rates. Japanese into English is priced per source character; English into Japanese per source word. The difference between the second and third card is the translation check — the pass that catches mistranslation and omission rather than only reading well.

The four-step process

Translation is step one of four

The same sequence runs on every manuscript. It is what separates a translation from a paper somebody can submit.

1

Translation

A translator with a degree in your subject reads for intention, not only for words, and renders the research clearly.

2

Review

A native expert in the target language verifies accuracy, consistency and completeness against the source.

3

Editing

A specialist editor works on how it reads, so the paper communicates rather than merely corresponds.

4

Final check

A native proofreader runs the last quality-control pass before the file goes back to you.

What we need from you

A good translation needs
the author in the loop

Japanese leaves out what English has to state. The subject is often absent, number is unmarked, and the logical link between two clauses is frequently implied rather than written. A translator into English has to supply all three — and where the source genuinely allows two readings, the honest thing is to ask you which one you meant.

That is why we send questions rather than guessing. A translation that never generated a single query is usually one where somebody guessed.

What helps most

  • Answering the translator’s queries, even briefly
  • Terminology from your earlier papers, if you have it
  • The journal you are submitting to, and its guidelines
  • Any figure or table the text refers to
  • Telling us which of two readings you meant, when we ask

None of this is a condition of the service. All of it makes the result better.

After the translation

The parts that come after the last pass

A translated paper still has to be submitted, and then defended. These four are ordered with the translation more often than not.

Journal criteria check

Word counts, section order, reference style and figure limits checked against the journal you name.

Cover letter creation

The one page an editor reads before deciding whether to send your paper out for review.

Journal proxy submission

We complete the submission portal on your behalf and handle the queries it sends back.

Response letter

The point-by-point reply to reviewers, drafted so the rebuttal reads as calm rather than defensive.

The full list of author support — abstracts, grant applications, audio, rehearsal — is on Academic translation.

Frequently asked

Questions about manuscript translation

Say what you want translated when you order: the body text always, and figure captions, table headers and footnotes when you include them. The quote lists what was counted, so nothing is assumed either way.

No. A subject-matter translator writes it, a native reviewer checks it against the source, an editor works on how it reads and a proofreader runs the last pass. Machine output edited afterwards is a different service, and it is sold as one.

It is the pass that catches mistranslation and omission rather than only reading well: verification against the source, missing sentences, terminology and tone. On English → Japanese it is the difference between the second and third rate; take it when the text will be passed on to several people and being misread is costly.

Because Japanese leaves out what English has to state — the subject, number, and the link between two clauses. Where the source genuinely allows two readings, asking you is the honest option. A translation that never generated a single query is usually one where somebody guessed.

On Japanese → English, one proofreading pass of the translated manuscript before you submit it, at no charge. Changes you make yourself after delivery are read as part of that same pass.

Yes, for thirty days, through your coordinator rather than directly to the translator’s inbox. That is what lets us keep the translator working and still get you a substantive answer — the coordinator carries the question to the person who made the choice and brings back their reasoning.
