Editing that survives
peer review.
Three levels of English editing, priced per word and quoted before the work starts. Every manuscript is read by a subject-matter STEM editor in Tokyo, then by a named senior reviewer.

Document types
Editing for every document a researcher writes
Abstract creation
The two hundred words an editor reads first, written from your full manuscript.
Native check letter
A signed statement that a native English speaker edited the paper, for journals that ask for one.
Manuscript editing
The full paper: grammar, terminology, structure and journal style, in one sequence.
Response letter
The point-by-point reply to reviewers, drafted so the rebuttal reads as calm rather than defensive.
Journal criteria check
Word counts, section order, reference style and figure limits checked against the journal you name.
Journal proxy submission
We complete the submission portal on your behalf and handle the queries it sends back.
Grant applications
Funding proposals edited for the reviewer who is not in your field but decides your budget.
Academic documents
Theses, dissertations, syllabi, CVs and the letters a university asks you for.
Audio file creation
Your paper or talk recorded by a native speaker, for rehearsal or for a journal’s media page.
Cover letter creation
The one page an editor reads before deciding whether to send your paper out for review.
Peer review comment check
We read the reviewers’ comments with you and say plainly what each one is asking for.
Presentation rehearsal
A run-through with a native speaker, including the questions you will be asked afterwards.
Why researchers choose Forte
What you are actually comparing
Five criteria, judged the same way, side by side. Rather than marking ourselves well and everyone else badly, each row states what the difference actually is — so you can check it against the last service you used.
Criterion

Typical alternative
Editing accuracy
Depth of language precision and consistency
Two named human passes on every job — editor, then senior reviewer
One pass, often with a software check standing in for the second
Subject-matter expertise
Who actually reads the paper
A STEM editor from your own field, named on the job
A general academic editor, field matched where possible
Publication success support
How the paper is prepared for submission
Formatted to the house style of the journal you name
One generic academic style guide
Editorial transparency
What you get back
Every change visible, editor and reviewer named on the record
Clean copy, changes already merged in
Turnaround efficiency
How fast, and what it costs to go faster
From 2 business days; rush tiers from four hours
Three to seven days, usually with no rush tier
○ and △ are the Japanese convention for a checklist: ○ means the criterion is fully met, △ that it is partly met. We have deliberately not used the third mark — “not met at all” is a claim about other companies we cannot verify.
The right-hand column describes what is common across the category, not a named competitor. Naming one invites a rebuttal and a legal letter, and a reader who has used that company will trust the whole table less.

Frequently asked
Questions about editing
Research papers and manuscripts, abstracts, response letters to reviewers, cover letters, grant applications, theses and dissertations, syllabi, CVs and the letters a university or a journal asks you for. If a document is written in English by a researcher, we edit it.
Proofreading stops at grammar, spelling and punctuation. Editing goes into structure, terminology and argument: the order of the sections, whether a claim is supported where it is made, and whether the paper reads to the audience the journal actually has. Editing Lite is proofreading; Elite and 365 are editing.
Your paper is assigned to an editor from your own field. Many hold PhDs or MDs, some serve as journal reviewers, and all have been through the same selection and training. When you ask for an estimate you can state what background the editor should have, and we match the assignment to it.
Every employee and every external partner signs a confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement. Access to a file is limited to the assigned editor and the assigned reviewer, and the assignment is logged. Forte holds the Privacy Mark for personal information management and works under ISO 9001:2015. If you would like an agreement executed directly with you, write to confidentiality@forte-science.co.jp.
Yes, for thirty days after delivery. Communication runs through your coordinator rather than directly to the editor’s inbox, which is what lets us keep the editor working on manuscripts and still get you a substantive answer — the coordinator carries the question to the person who made the change and brings back their reasoning.
Yes. The certificate names the document and states that it was edited by a native English speaker, which is what journals ask for. It is issued on request at no extra charge, and a first order includes it.
